Press Conference at Press Club Kolkata

Press Club Kolkata, on the Maidan near Esplanade, has been the city's club of working journalists since 1945, and a press conference there takes the news to reporters on their own ground. Indian PR Distribution (IPRD)® books the hall, brings the media and follows the story through to the next day's papers.

Why Press Club Kolkata works for a press conference

It is the journalists' own address. The club was approved at a meeting of about 40 Calcutta reporters in July 1945, moved to a tent on the Maidan in 1960 and to a semi-permanent building six years later. It describes itself as the oldest press club of working reporters in the subcontinent, and it hosts Meet-the-Press programmes and seminars alongside the press conferences held on its premises.

For a reporter, coming to the Press Club is part of the day's routine, and the Maidan location is central for desks across the city, with Esplanade Metro close by. That makes it a natural choice for news-led announcements: statements, civic and cultural stories, books, awards and organisations with something to say to the city.

It is a working venue rather than a showroom. Plan the branding, the screen and the refreshments around that, and see the press conference cost guide for how the budget compares with a hotel.

Booking

How a Press Club booking works.

  1. 01

    Check the date

We check the hall and date with the club first, before invitations go out, because the calendar fills with other press meets.

  2. 02

    Hall Booking Form

The club's Hall Booking Form is published on its website: printed, filled in and brought in hard copy to the club at the Maidan Tent. We handle it for you.

  3. 03

    Confirm the set-up

Seating, the table and backdrop, sound and any screen, agreed with the club and checked on a recce.

  4. 04

    Invite and run

Invitations in English and Bengali, follow-up calls, the media desk on the day and the release to every desk afterwards.

Planning notes

What makes a Press Club press meet go well.

Lead with the news

Reporters at the Press Club hear several announcements a week. The first two minutes should carry the story.

Time it for the editions

We usually advise a weekday slot between late morning and early afternoon, so reporters can file for the next day.

Check the day's calendar

A major political press meet the same day can take the room. We check before fixing the date.

Keep the set simple

A clear backdrop, a table for the speakers and good sound for questions read well on camera.

Bengali and English

Spokespeople ready to answer in Bengali as well as English, or a colleague who can.

Kits at the door

Release, fact sheet and photos ready at the media desk, printed or digital.

Bring this

What to have ready for the day.

  • Printed or digital press kits: release, fact sheet, photos and spokesperson details
  • A backdrop or standee with your name, sized to the table and readable on camera
  • Spokespeople briefed for questions in Bengali and English
  • A list of invited media, and a person at the media desk who knows them
  • A laptop and any screen content tested on the club's set-up during the recce

We confirm capacity, AV and the hall charge with the club on each booking.

How do you book a hall at Press Club Kolkata?

Who can hold a press conference at Press Club Kolkata?

Companies, organisations, political parties and individuals have all held press conferences there. Each booking is made with the club, and we confirm the hall and date with it before invitations go out.

What does IPRD add to a Press Club press conference?

Everything around the hall: the media list, invitations in English and Bengali, follow-up calls, the media desk, press kits, interviews, the release to every desk and the coverage report. See press conference media relations.
