Book Launch Press Conference in Kolkata
Kolkata reads, and its papers still review. Indian PR Distribution (IPRD)® plans book launch press conferences for authors, publishers and the institutions behind them: the right literary and culture desks in the room, a reading or a conversation worth reporting, and the release, pictures and Bengali copy ready for the next day's papers.

Why it is news
A book becomes news through its author and its argument.
Desks rarely cover a launch because a book exists. They cover it because the author is a known voice, the book says something new about Bengal or the country, a respected guest is releasing it, or the subject touches a story already in the news.
We help you find that line before the invitation goes out. A memoir by a business leader may belong on the business pages; a history of a neighbourhood belongs on the city pages; a novel by a first-time author may need a reading, a guest and a strong photograph to earn its space.
Timing matters in this city. The 49th International Kolkata Book Fair ran from 22 January to 3 February 2026 at the Boi Mela Prangan in Salt Lake, and the weeks around the fair are full of launches. A launch inside the fair finds readers; a launch a few weeks away from it can find more column space. We weigh both with you.

Who covers it
The desks a Kolkata book launch speaks to.
| Desk | What they look for |
|---|---|
| Books and literary pages | The argument of the book, an excerpt, the author's journey |
| Culture and entertainment supplements | The guests, the reading, the photograph of the evening |
| Bengali dailies | A Bengali author, a Bengal subject, or a translation into Bengali |
| City pages | A book about Kolkata, its people or its places |
| Business or features desks | A book by a founder, an executive or an expert, read for what it says about their field |
| Television and digital | A short interview with the author, and the moment of the release |
Run of show
What a book launch press conference looks like.
| When | What happens | For the media |
|---|---|---|
| 45 minutes before | Media desk opens; kits and review copies set out | Seats reserved for reporters, a position for cameras |
| Start | Welcome and the book in two minutes | The news line is clear before anyone checks a phone |
| 10 minutes | Release of the book by the guest | The photo moment, set up and lit for cameras |
| 15 to 20 minutes | A short reading or conversation with the author | Quotes reporters can use |
| Q&A | Questions from the media in English and Bengali | A moderator keeps it moving |
| After | One-to-one interviews with the author | Run to a list, television first |
Timings are a typical shape; we fix them with you around the guest list and the day's news. For the full sequence, see how to organise a press conference.
Two ways to run it
Managed, or at the venue you already have.
Managed (Mode A)
We find the venue through our venue partners, from a heritage hall to a hotel or a bookshop space, arrange the backdrop, screen, sound and F&B by plate count, and run the media side end to end. Managed press conference.
Media relations only (Mode B)
Your publisher, bookstore or institution has the hall and the guests. We bring the literary, culture and Bengali desks, run the media desk, and follow the story through to the reviews. Press conference media relations.
Venue, F&B and production are quoted separately from the media work, on your brief. What drives the cost of a press conference.
The press kit
What reporters need to write about a book.
- The release: the book, the author, the publisher, price and where to buy
- A synopsis in a paragraph, and the book's argument in a sentence
- An author biography and a high-resolution author photograph
- The cover at print resolution
- An approved excerpt, with permission to quote
- Review copies for literary desks, or a request form for them
- The Bengali release, where the book or the audience is Bengali
A fuller list is in our press kit checklist.
After the event
From the evening to the reviews.
Release the same day
Written for the next morning's editions and sent within hours. Our guide on how to write a book launch press release sets out what it needs.
Pictures with captions
A selection of the best photographs, captioned with names and titles, to every desk that attended and every desk that could not.
Bengali release
Written natively for Bengali dailies and their literary pages, not translated, with the author's name and the title as Bengali readers know them.
Wider distribution
For a national readership, the release can run on the national wires through national press release distribution.
Coverage follow-up
Calls to the reporters filing, extra quotes or figures when they ask, and corrections caught before the next edition.
Report
What ran in print, digital and television, with clippings and links, in one report.
Kolkata media
Bengali and national desks, from our own city.
Our organic campaign for a Kolkata entrepreneur, the first Indian to finish a marathon at the Geographic North Pole, was carried by 18 publications in English, Hindi and Bengali, from Ei Samay to The Times of India, The Economic Times and ANI. It was a pitching campaign rather than a press conference, and it shows the desks we work with every week.

FAQ
Book launch questions
Is a press conference the right format for a book launch in Kolkata?
It suits a book with a news line: a known author, a subject in the news, a strong guest or a book about Bengal. For a quieter title, a reading with a few invited reporters and review copies sent to literary desks often works better, and we will tell you which fits.
Should a book launch be held during the Kolkata Book Fair?
It depends on the goal. Launching at the fair puts the book in front of readers; launching a few weeks before or after can win more space, because the desks are less crowded with other launches. We plan the date with you.
Which media cover book launches in Kolkata?
Literary and books pages, culture and entertainment supplements, Bengali dailies, city pages for books about Kolkata, and television and digital teams for interviews. The list is built for each book, by beat and language.
Do you send review copies to journalists?
Yes. We plan review copies with the publisher, send them to the literary desks most likely to review the book, and follow up after the launch.
Can the launch be in English and Bengali?
Yes. Invitations, the release and the moderation can be in both, and the author can take questions in either language.
